6th GTLtec 2007: 22-23 January

"The production of high quality and hive value base oils from gas-to-liquid (GTL) process will make the commodity very marketable and give Qatar's GTL companies a leading place in the world market"

H.E. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah-Second Deputy Premier and Minster of Energy and Industry

Laying the Groundwork for the world's most authoritative GTL conference

The 6th GTLtec 2007 was organized with the intention of presenting to the GTL industry, an authoritative conference with industry leaders convening to give our delegates the real global picture of GTL developments, technologies and opportunities.

A follow up to the resounding success of the previous GTLtec conference, which was held in 2005, the 6th GTLtec 2007 was meant to provide industry insiders with a one stop conference for them to receive updates on the latest happenings in the industry.

And what better place to host such an event, but Qatar, which is home to the world's largest reserve of gas, and currently houses the world's largest GTL plants.

The conference was held at a momentous chapter in the history of the GTL industry, as the world's first commercial scale ORYX GTL plant was being completed.

In addition to this, construction on the long awaited and single most ambitious Shell-Pearl GTL project was also beginning. When completed, the Shell-Pearl GTL project will be the world's largest integrated GTL plant.

With all these positive developments surrounding the staging of the 6th GTLtec, the foundations for a highly successful conference were already laid!

Patronage of H.E. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah - Second Deputy Premier and Minster of Energy and Industry, Qatar Petroleum Chairman

Our respected patron H.E. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah has always lent GTLtec his gracious patronage, and has continued to be a linchpin to the success of the GTLtec conference.

The 6th GTLtec was no different. H.E. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah set the tone for the conference by outlining the Qatar government's ambitious plans with regards to becoming the global hub for GTL production.

He also shared his views on why GTL products and projects will continue to generate more interest, and how Qatar aims to position itself in the context of this changing demand for GTL.

Our delegates were granted the honor being among the first in the world to hear about the Qatar government's latest plans for developing GTL technologies.

6th GTLtec Conference Details

Market leaders and experts in the GTL Industry were at the 6th GTLtec, presenting the latest industry updates, sharing their expertise and providing progress reports on some of the world's most ambitious GTL projects.

Held in Doha at the Sheraton Doha Resort and Hotel on 22-23 January 2007, the conference attracted over 400 delegates from 21 countries, who had come to be a part of this exciting event and hear from the remarkable line up of authoritative speakers.

The 6th GTLtec 2007 was organized by Center for Management Technology (CMT), the industry's market leader in GTL conferences.

The event was supported by Qatar Petroleum.

The event was also sponsored by major companies including Exxon Mobil, Shell, Sasol Chevron, BP and PetroSA!

6th GTLtec Conference Highlights

Among the most popular topics discussed at the 6th GTLtec, was Oryx's 'Lessons Learned and Expansion Plans', in which Chris Turner, the General Manager of Oryx GTL announced that the start-up of the ambitious Oryx GTL plant was completed within budget.

According to Chris Turner, "Oryx GTL works, and is on track to be the highly successful pioneer for a global industry that we always said it would be. That's good news for Qatar, and its good news for the GTL industry." Chris also shared on some of the challenges of the start-up, which is a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and Sasol of South Africa.

Other highlights include the lucrative partnership between Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil and their diversification into GTL. The Pearl GTL project achievements, GTL technology breakthroughs and challenges, as well as the challenges of the changing marketplace were some of the other highlights of the conference.

Also on the table was discussion on the crippling effects of the constantly increasing oil prices, and the resurgence of interest in renewable energy sources, as well as synthetic fuel technology like Gas to Liquids, Coal to Liquids and Biomass to Liquids.

At the 6th GTLtec, leading technology manufacturers in alternative energy were able to reveal to this truly global audience, their latest innovations. The potential of producing alternative energy, which is cheaper and environmentally friendly, was also discussed in great detail.

POSITIVE Feedback from our Delegates

6th GTLtec was well received by our delegates, many of whom attend the conference as they view it as the key event for all serious GTL players where they are able to hear about the newest developments that shape their industry.

Some of the positive testimonials we received include those from Dr. Rolf Ødegård, Business Development Manager GTL at StatoilHydro, who said "GTLtec is the key event for all serious GTL players."

Ms. Cindy Brown, Business Manager at South Hook LNG project, said "GTLtec is a great venue to hear the latest thinking on GTL projects around the world." She is one of the many delegates who attended the 6th GTLtec, who expressed their satisfaction with the content of the program.

In addition to this, 6th GTLtec was also heavily covered by the Peninsula, Qatar's leading English language daily, whose reports paid special attention to some of the important topics raised and discussed.

In Conclusion

As the most authoritative conference on GTL technology and markets, the 6th GTLtec was a resounding success!

We are however, not content to rest on our laurels, and we want to do better than the success of 2007.

The 7th GTLtec 2008, organized by CMT, will once again deliver as the number one conference on the latest developments in the fast changing GTL industry.
